Korena in the Kitchen turned 10 years old in January! It’s amazing to think that this little blog has been with me through an entire decade, chronicling my life in food. It’s fair to say much has changed in that time – three jobs, two post-secondary credentials, a boyfriend turned fiancé turned husband, home ownership, and now parenthood – but the thing that hasn’t changed is my love of making delicious things and sharing them here.
However, I have found myself struggling with the motivation to blog in the past few years. If you’re a long time reader (hi! thank you for sticking with me for so long!) you’ve probably noticed that my posts have become less and less frequent. The parts that I like – the creating and the sharing – feel overshadowed by the time and effort required to write an entire post and recipe with step by step instructions, edit and upload and link a million photos, create and upload and link a printable recipe PDF, etc etc etc, and more often than not I lose steam before I even finish writing a post – not to mention that having a baby means I now have significantly less free time! My current interests in the kitchen have also changed from constant experimentation and exploration and trying new techniques and putting my own twist on everything, to baking for stress release and as a simple, meditative, creative flow, which is hard to achieve when you are stopping every 30 seconds to set up and take a process photo and flipping back and forth between three recipes that you are trying to combine into one.
I certainly don’t want to stop posting here – like I said, I love creating and sharing and it’s also very satisfying to have a record of all the things I’ve made – but guess I need to give myself permission to start posting in a different way that still feels fun (this is supposed to be a fun hobby, after all!). I’m sure there will come a time when I want to post a detailed step-by-step recipe again, but in the meantime, I hope to be back here more often to share photo or two of a thing I made with a few thoughts and a simplified recipe post, or even just link to the recipe on another site, that kind of thing (I’ve started a new “Other People’s Recipes” category for this).
So – to mark a decade and celebrate the start of the next, here’s a cake I made a few months ago 😀 This is Nigella Lawson’s Coffee and Walnut Layer Cake, and it’s brilliant because not only is coffee and walnut a stellar combination, but you make the entire thing – both the cake and the frosting – in the food processor, so it’s essentially a one bowl affair (I halved the recipe and baked it in two six-inch cake pans). I made this particular cake to enjoy with a cup of tea in the afternoons when Max takes his habitual nap-on-my-lap and I can rest on the couch with some Netflix and a snack. Even if you don’t have a baby, I suggest you make this cake so you can do the same. You can find the recipe here on Nigella.com 🙂
